Quarantine Survival Guide for Parents Home Schooling

What can I say? These past few months have been…

WOW. Am I right?

Just wow.

If you’re in the same boat as most parents in the world, you’ve had to accommodate the fact that your kids were suddenly and unexpectedly given an extra four months of summer holiday.

And to top it all off, they’re unable to leave the house. Read more

How Much Sleep Does A Baby Need Daily? This week’s question comes from Tracey and she writes:

“What is a normal amount of time to have a baby awake during the day so that they sleep better at night? My baby is two months old.”

Thanks Tracey! It’s a common misconception really, that if you keep the baby awake longer throughout the day, they’ll sleep better at night; the exact opposite is true. Read more

What To Do When Your Baby Wakes Too EarlyWhat can you do about an early riser?

I’’m going to give you about four or five things today that I call my early morning checklist that you can go through and see if you can nip this little problem of when your baby wakes too early in the bud.

If you’’ve just started The Sleep Sense Program though, I want to reassure you that the early morning wake ups will fade out. I find that within the first week or two, they’’re fairly common. It’’s just your baby’s bodies way of consolidating and organising some night time sleep. They might wake up at the five o’’clock hour feeling pretty refreshed, but that will pass with time. Don’’t panic.

If you’’ve been working on this for weeks, months and you’re still stuck in this early morning wake up, I want to give you some suggestions. Read more

Does Your Baby Need Soothing Back To Sleep?

Soothing Back to Sleep…

This question comes from Kim who writes:

“Why does my 13 month old wake up between the hours of 2:00am and 4:00am and just needs to be patted right back to sleep? I don’t take him out of his cot but it takes a toll on me to stand over him and pat his back until he falls asleep again.”

Well Kim, You want to think about how Jacob falls asleep at bedtime. If you find that part of your bedtime routine includes putting him in his cot, and then standing above him patting his back, in a way he’s falling asleep on his own but in another way he’s not. Read more

Sleep Training Twins who Share a RoomThis week’s question comes from Trina and she writes:

I have boy twins who share a room but not the same cot. They are six months old and they wake up two to four times a night. I just do not know what to do. I feel like I cannot let them cry because one is going to wake up the other one.” Read more

Night light – Is it affecting my child’s sleep?Sleep is one the most important factors in achieving physical wellbeing. Newborns to 6 months of age, should sleep up to 20 hours a day, including naps.  Children from 6 months to 3 ½ years of age should sleep between 11 and 13 hours a night, as well as the necessary day time naps.

In the evening, the reason you and your child start to feel sleepy is because your body is starting to produce Melatonin which is also known as the sleep hormone.  Melatonin is a small gland in the brain which helps to control your sleep and wake cycles, levels rise in mid to late evening, remain high for most of the night and drop in the early hours of the morning. Judy’s Personal Experience

Working on this blog takes me back to when I had my first daughter Jannah. During my pregnancy I read all the books but nowhere in my preparing for baby journey did it cross my mind that teaching my daughter to sleep would be part of the role of being a parent! I was completely oblivious to this and to some extent ignorant as I just expected a child to go to sleep by simply shutting their eyes regardless of whether they were in their bed, cot or anywhere else, sleep would just come!
